Description

Incredible Rare Large 1928 Norwegian Open Warp Art Deco Tapestry by Sophie Knagenhjelms. Intricate work and fine detailing. The stunning tapestry won first prize at the Pacific Southwest Exhibition in Long Beach California in 1928. The Gilded Bronze medal awarded to Sofie Knagenhjelms accompanies the tapestry. Measures 7 feet long 63 inches wide (including wood hanger). Weight 5 lbs. Tapestry weaving became established in Norway in the 17th century. During the baroque and the rococo in the 17th and 18th centuries, tapestry weaving blossomed as part of the folk tradition in Norway. Many beautiful and highly individual tapestries were woven using hand-spun and plant-dyed wool. The geometric tapestry technique in Norway is called rutevev. Single interlock is more usual, and once the loose threads are woven in, the back is as beautiful as the front, and the weaving is reversible.
