Description
The Golden Trail by Fred Thompson (1844-1909) Hand Colored Photograph.which shows a quiet lane with trees whose leaves have almost all dropped off. Closely inspired by the aesthetic of Wallace Nutting, this is a lovely early 20th century example of antique fine art photography. Signed and titled. In frame measures 7 1/2"x9 3/4"x 1/2". Weight 12 oz. In 1908, after collaborating with Wallace Nutting Fred Thompson founded the Thompson Art Co. in Portland, ME, and became one of the primary competitors (along with David Davidson and Charles H. Sawyer) to Nutting’s control of the tourist and middle class market for hand-colored pictorialist photographs. His images included New England landscapes, colonial interior scenes, tall-masted sailing ships. Perhaps too competitive, he committed suicide by ingesting cyanide. His son, Frederick M. Thompson, ran the business from 1909-23.
