Description

Edgard Tytgat (Belgian, 1879-1957) Oil Portrait of a woman. Signed lower left. Edgard Tytgat (1879-1957) was a Belgian modernist painter, engraver, and illustrator known for his distinctive narrative works that retell myths, legends, fairy tales, and scenes of childhood, everyday life, and eroticism in a poetic style blending impressionistic roots, expressionistic elements, and deliberate naivete. His works, which often depict the everyday scenes of his native country, utilize Post-Impressionist techniques, with impressionistic brushstrokes, vivid colors, and an overall feeling of harmony. Tytgat s art characteristically presents a superficially childlike and cheerful appearance while conveying darker, bittersweet themes of lost innocence, fantasy, and personal autobiography, with recurring motifs such as windows, circuses, fairs, and his wife Maria as muse.Notable compositions by this artist include The Port of Ostend, View of the North Sea, and On the Market. He was an active member of avant-garde circles in Belgium, attending numerous exhibitions, and publishing a number of essays on art. In his later years, he turned to abstract forms, producing works that incorporate abstract elements into his realist paintings. Sight 17" H x 12-3/8".
