Original Francis W. Dahl (1907-1973) wood framed WWII Coast Guard SPARS cartoon illustration with related 1943 correspondence dated July 21, 1943. An especially compelling feature of this piece is the inclusion of the original typed July 8, 1943 correspondence on the back addressed directly to Francis Dahl at the Boston Herald- Traveler. A scarce and highly displayable example of WWII- era military humor illustration, combining original comic art, women’s military history, and documented provenance.Francis Wellington Dahl was an American cartoonist for the Boston Herald from the 1930s to the 1970s. When the Boston Herald was purchased by The Record?American in 1972, Dahl’s comic appear in several collections, including Left Handed Compliments (1941), Dahl’s Cartoons (1943), What More Dahl?
