In the 1810s, he embarked on the extraordinary mission to observe and draw every bird species in America. Beginning in 1827, the English firm of R. Havell and Son reproduced Audubon?s detailed watercolors as large-folio prints. The ambitious Birds of America series took 11 years to complete and resulted in 435 separate images. In this lively composition, four pileated woodpeckers perch on a dead and decaying branch whose soft wood has made a home for grubs, one of the which the adult female bird has captured in its beak.
