Description
This exquisite pair of porcelain "snowball" perfume bottles are the work of renowned French porcelain artist Jacob Petit. Taking their inspiration from the exquisite Schneeballen vases made by Meissen from 1730 to 1750, these delicate vessels boast hundreds of tiny white flowers covering the entire surface, accented by vines of floral "snowball" puffs and intricate floral bouquet finials. This design was one of Petit’s great successes, and was executed meticulously. Each 3"x3"x8". Weight combined 1 lb 2 oz. Jacob Petit owned one of the most important and well-known porcelain factories in France, and became one of the major producers of Rococo ornamental ware during the 1830s. Born in Paris in 1796 as Jacob Mardouche he qualified as a porcelain manufacturer in 1820 and traveled widely. In 1830-1831, Jacob Petit published an important interior design collection, which included designs for vases, furniture, chairs, silver and bronze objects, all heavily influent by classical, Rococo and Gothic styles. He was highly successful in business as well, and his designs were appreciated by such luminaries as Louis XVIII, Charles X and the duchess of Berry. His highly decorative porcelain was enormously popular in both England and France and has proven to be well-made and designed to endure the test of time. At the 1834 Paris Exhibition, he was praised for his genius for inventing numerous and varied new forms, revolutionizing the manufacture of porcelain. His work inspired imitators throughout Europe and his name was even given to a Rococo Revival style. PROVENANCE: Willtown Plantation, Willtown Bluff, Adams Run SC
