Description
Antique Ottoman Mejidie Order Medal. The Ottoman Mejidie Order established by Sultan Abdul Mejid in 1852. Minted in Constantinople (stamped on back) and bears the Ottoman Imprint for silver (sah, meaning pure). Also has small insignia on the tip of the rounded points on the outer layer between two crescents and stars. The central section with the Sultan’s tugra is pure gold. The outer red enamelled sectioned has words in arabic script meaning devotion, loyalty, and truth. The Order was awarded to foreigners as well as internally. The prestige associated with this Order is evident if you consider that Ataturk initally received only a 4th class Mejidie Order. It was only later that he received a double breasted Mejidie Order. Comes in original antique box. Measures 5" x 2.25", total lot weight is 3.9 oz.
Condition: good, patina/wear due to age
