Pair of Vintage Large Carved Wood Colon Statues made in the Ivory Coast by the Baoule people. The gent with a gun in a hip holster 43". The woman with a large gourd on her head 40". Combined weight 70 pds. As a genre, colon statues originated in West Africa, apparently among the Baoule in the Ivory Coast. They achieved international popularity after World War II and after decolonisation. It has been argued that the genre originated as an African response to colonisation and the repression at the hands of the colonial state
