Shuzo Ikeda "Shuuka: A child carrying a basket of fruit with two small birds. Published by the famous Watanabe Publisher of Tokyo. Watanabe commissioned contemporary artists to create designs which were printed and distributed by Watanabe to special customers only. The artists carved the blocks themselves, which Watanabe then printed on hand-made Torinoko paper. These are great designs by a variety of contemporary artists, including Shuzo Ikeda, who is well known for his images of children. SHUZO IKEDA (1922-2004) was born in Kisakata-machi, Akita Prefecture, Japan. He graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1945, and began to teach from 1946 to 1955. After teaching, Ikeda worked in Tokyo as a full-time moku hanga woodcut artist, becoming a member of the Nihon Hanga Kyokai artist association. He was especially known for his integration of the woodblock grain in his images. Measures 14" x 18.5" and weighs 2 lbs 13 oz.
