Description
Thomas L. McKenney (American, 1785-1859) & James Hall (American, 1793-1868). Prints read "Chon-Man-I-Case, An Otto Half Chief" published in Philadelphia by E.C.Biddle in 1836 AND "Mon-Chonsia, A Kansas Chief." Published in Philadelphia by Daniel Rice & James G. Clark in 1842. Two large-format hand-colored prints after lithographs from McKenney and Hall’s "Indian Tribes of North America." When leaders of various Native American tribes visited President Monroe, Thomas McKenney, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs and a champion of Native American interests, commissioned artists including Charles Bird King to paint portraits of the delegates in their choice of dress. Unfortunately, most of King’s original paintings later burned in a fire at the Smithsonian. Given this, the lithographs published in McKenney and Hall’s "Indian Tribes of North America" are the only surviving records of the likenesses of many important 19th century Native American leaders. Professionally framed and matted. In frame 22.5"x18.5"x1.5". Weight combined 12 pds. Not examined out of the frames.
