Description
Very Rare Radcliffe & Guignard, Columbia SC Ornate Coin Silver Teapot c. 1855-56. Measures 7 1/2"x4"x7. Approximate siver weight 432 grams. Thomas W. Radcliffe and James S. Guignard formed a partnership in 1855 and primarily dealt in watches and jewelry. According to William Albaugh, Radcliffe also imported and sold guns and other military goods. He formed and became captain of the Chicora Rifles. The partnership was short-lived, for it is absent from the 1860 Columbia city directory.. Radcliffe traveled to Charleston during the attack on Fort Sumter, and received a promotion to Major. He was given charge of the Lightwood Knot Spring training camp. Radcliffe’s son and namesake also served the confederacy, but unfortunately died in battle in 1864. Radcliffe died in 1870 and left instructions for his son Lewis and friend, Richard Davis to continue the business.
