Description
Antique Original Bronze "Beggars of Perugia" by Jakob (Jacob) Plessner German sculptor (Berlin) 1871-1936. Solid Bronze. Signed. Measures 4.5"x3"x7". Weight 5 lbs. Grandson of the learned rabbi Salomon Plessner (1797-1883), the sculptor Jakob Plessner was a member of the Association of Artists of Berlin Sculptors and the Association of German Sculptors, he studied from 1896 to 1901 at the Academy from Berlin with Ludwig Manzel, Gerhard Janensch, Ernst Herter and Peter Breuer. From 1899 he exhibited regularly at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. He had gone to Rome to study from 1901 to 1903 as a winner of the Prix de Rome. He creates tombstones (Berlin-Wei?ensee, Ohlsdorf near Hamburg), plaques and bust portraits, including those of Oskar Tietz and Moritz Mendelssohn, 1928 (at the Lessing Museum, Berlin), as well as sculptures. Jakob Plessner received the Michael Beer Prize in 1901. Among his works is a bust of the philosopher Moses Mendelsohn. The half-figure of the "Great Elector" stood in the representative hall of the Jewish community in Berlin.
